Life But Not As We Know It

Some blank verse written in Nov '99 for a Church Youth Service.
It contains thoughts provoked by the subject of evolution
and does contain some sarcasm.

"Life But Not As We Know It"

Science and the religions
peer up into space,
"There must be life out there
and it's probably not like the human race."

"If we use microphones we can listen for sounds,
and we'll send out signals they're bound to understand."

Perhaps they are watching,
already carting off people
to show to their leader
the specimens they've found.

But we know that contact has already been made,
recorded on scrolls over thousands of years -
in the beginning He created the heavens and the earth,
angels spoke to men -
destroyed cities by fire -
a new world is coming -
but nobody hears.

You decide to return to Him who made you,
you set out upon your journey.
You return to a Father who is for ever young,
not slow and infirm and carrying the weight of a billion years.

He leaps from His throne, runs out of His house,
to meet you and help you carry your bags
when He hears you are on the way.

(You think to yourself,
"I'm so unclean and ugly, and what a state I'm in !
Can it be possible One so high and pure and clean
can love a thing like me.")

Hordes of people have already arrived,
but He says, "Oh, there's plenty of room for you."

But evolution is both hard and cruel,
where the weak don't stand a chance.
There is no kindness there you know.
Those who are ill, and the lame and the blind,
are pushed out of the way and just left behind.

The great story of life
is not the survival of the fittest,
not a slow endless struggle
up hill upon hill where you never reach the top.

The big story of life is a Father so kind
He takes the arm of the lame and the blind.
Ahead for His friends is a kingdom on earth,
of health for the lame and light for the blind.

Ahead for evolution is a platform in space
of great metal girders and metal plates,
looking back down on a desolate world
where the wealth was all squandered
by the powerful and rich.

Those on the platform are getting away,
they leave behind many for there just wasn't room.
They are off to find another world
 - - - - - just to go through it all, all over again
