The Nature of God
How Can There Be A God? A man gripped the iron railings he was facing. In his bare feet he kicked the iron uprights as hard as he could, bruising and fracturing his toes. It caused him great pain. He gripped the railings even harder, and again kicked the iron railings. It caused him excruciating agony. The pain was so intense he cried out, "There is no God. How could he allow such suffering?".
This fictional situation parallels exactly what has happened in the world since men rejected the truth.
We are dying of cancer, yet we reject the laws of health.
We are dying of AIDS because we lead dissipated lives, slaves to drugs and totally ignoring the laws of adultery, fornication, and homosexuality.
Our society is on the verge of collapse as families disintegrate, dissolving in the heady tide of sexual license.
We die of hunger as governments reject their responsibility towards the people.
"How can there be a God?", we cry.
We Are Without Excuse Paul wrote many years ago that the reality of God was plain through his creation, but men purposely chose their own sensual way. He wrote that we can only blame ourselves for all the suffering we have caused - that we are without any excuse.
Not only do we see the wonders of the world around us, God left us with ancient scrolls in which he described himself, his personal longings and goals, and how he is going to accomplish those goals. It is not his desire to see men suffer in this age, and he foretells a time when all suffering will cease.
Men do not believe these scrolls, The Bible, to be the one and only instruction manual from God. So, just like when we ignore an instruction manual for some man-made device, things have gone horribly wrong.
Have you got problems? Read the manual.
The First Great Commandment
Jesus confirmed that the first of the two great commandments is to love God, to love him with all your heart, with all your strength, with all your soul.
The two great commandments summarise the ten commandments of Exodus 20.
Now, instead of just dwelling on what we indeed should be doing, let's think how God feels.
GOD WANTS TO BE LOVED Going by the intensity behind that great first commandment it obviously follows that God wants to be loved. He has feelings, emotions and desires. He wants to be acknowledged and appreciated, he wants to be discussed, written about. He wants us to write songs and music. He wants us to rejoice in the knowledge of his promises to mankind.
As human beings in his image we are able to experience in a tiny way emotions of love, rejoicing, sadness, jealousy, anger. But these are nothing to the great magnitude of the enormous intensity of God's feelings.
God's love includes that of a father giving up the only son he has. When he rejoices vast choirs sing. His heart is heavy and grieving as he looks down on the earth. He weeps. His jealousy extends to generations, and his kindness to many more generations. When he is really angry the earth and the very heavens shake.
God Should Be Everything To Us God said of himself, "I AM" to incorporate his timelessness, and how he is everywhere, and how there is none greater.
